Description: Tall stem covered with leaves resembling cypress, adorned with a glorious spire of red, tubular flowers. Attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. Well-drained sandy soil. Plant en masse for mutual support.

Lifespan: Biennial; occasionally annual

Light exposure: Full sun to high pine shade

Bloom color: Red

Bloom season: Mid-summer to early fall

Height (in bloom): 2 to 5 feet

Habitat: Dry sandy open areas (coastal; disturbed)

Note: Before it flowers, Standing cypress resembles a young dogfennel plant. If browsed by deer or rabbits, Standing cypress becomes multi-stemmed at the point of browsing.
